What is the best time to do Table Mountain?

Autumn and spring, on a clear, calm morning. March to May usually has the most settled hiking weather, September to November has the flowers, and in every month an early start gives you the coolest air and the lightest wind.

The seasons below are a guide, not a guarantee: Cape Town weather changes fast, and a calm day can come in any month. Wet-season figures come from climate data rather than an official weather service, so read them as a pattern. About 70% of the year's rain falls from June to September, and June is usually the wettest month. Summer is the dry season, but also the windy one.

Crowds follow the calendar too. December and January are the peak holiday months, when the cableway runs longest and the trails are busiest. Autumn and spring are quieter, and a weekday morning is quieter than a weekend in any season.

What is hiking Table Mountain like in summer?

Dry, bright and hot on the front of the mountain, which faces north towards the sun. Start at first light, carry more water than you think you need, or take the shaded route up Skeleton Gorge from Kirstenbosch.

Platteklip Gorge and India Venster go up the front face, which catches the sun from mid-morning. By late morning in December and January the stone steps of Platteklip are in full sun with little shade, and the heat reflects off the rock. An early start keeps you in shade for the first hour or more, and the south-easter often picks up in the afternoon, which is one more reason to be on the top by mid-morning.

Skeleton Gorge, on the back of the mountain, is the summer alternative. You enter through Kirstenbosch Garden first, then walk up through Afromontane forest that shades the path almost all the way, with wooden ladders beside small waterfalls. What is the tablecloth, and does the wind stop the hike?

The tablecloth is the white cloud that pours over the top when the south-easter blows. The wind does not close the trails, but it can close the cableway and drop visibility on the top to a few metres, so on a windy day be ready to walk down.

The south-easter, known locally as the Cape Doctor, blows mainly from about September to March. It pushes moist air up the far side of the mountain; the air cools, condenses into cloud on the top, and spills over the front edge like a cloth over a table, dissolving in the warmer air lower down. From the city it is beautiful. On the top it means cold, fast wind and cloud so thick you can lose the path, and the top is often much colder and windier than the streets below.

The cableway runs weather permitting, and wind is the usual reason it stops, sometimes for a few hours, sometimes for the day. It does not publish a wind limit. If you hike up on a windy day, assume you may have to walk down, and know that Platteklip Gorge is the way down; never go down India Venster. Turn back if cloud builds while you are on the way up. Can you hike Table Mountain in winter?

Yes, on the clear days between rain fronts, which can be the best hiking of the year. Avoid days of heavy rain, choose the stepped Platteklip route over rocky or wet ones, start early because the days are short, and dress for cold on the top.

Winter runs from June to August, and it is the wet season: rain comes in fronts from the Atlantic, often with a few calm, clear days in between. Daytime temperatures in town are about 12 to 17 °C, and the top is colder, especially in wind. Rock gets slippery when wet, and SANBI warns that Skeleton Gorge is very slippery in winter and dangerous after heavy rain. India Venster is the wrong choice in wet or windy weather.

The days are short, with sunrise nearly 8 am in midwinter, and the cableway stops earlier in the evening than in summer. It also closes for about two weeks each winter for maintenance (27 July to 9 August in 2026); the hiking trails stay open, but plan to walk down if you go in that window. When are the fynbos flowers out?

Spring, from about September to November, is the main flowering season on the mountain, though something is in flower in almost every month. The Cape Peninsula has about 2,800 plant types, around 158 of them found nowhere else (a 2026 checklist).

Fynbos is the fine-leaved shrubland that covers most of the mountain: proteas, ericas, restios and bulbs that flower after the winter rains. It makes up about 80% of the plants of the Cape Floral Region, the smallest and richest of the world's six floral kingdoms, and part of a World Heritage Site since 2004. In spring the slopes of the Kirstenbosch routes and the back table turn green and colourful, and guides on the longer hikes stop often to point out what is in bloom.

What time of day should you start?

As early as you can: at or soon after first light. Mornings are cooler, calmer and quieter, the front face is still in shade, and you leave time on the top before the afternoon wind and a safe margin before dark.

• Summer: start by 6 or 7 am. Sunrise is roughly 5:30 am in midsummer, and by late morning the front face is hot.
• Winter: start soon after it gets light, around 8 am, and aim to be off the mountain or at the cableway by mid-afternoon.
• Sunrise hikes: guided sunrise hikes are popular, and Lion's Head is the classic place for them. On Table Mountain, a dawn ascent works if you ride down once the cars start.
• Never hike down in the dark: the steps are uneven and the gorges darken early. If you are late, take the cableway if it is running.
• Afternoons: the south-easter often picks up after midday in summer, which is when cableway closures are most likely.

How do you check the weather and the cableway on the day?

Look at the cableway status on tablemountain.net or its app before you set out, check a mountain forecast for wind and cloud, and look up at the mountain itself: if the tablecloth is on and the flags are flying hard, choose another day or another hike.

The cableway posts its live status, open or closed for weather, on tablemountain.net, and cars run from about 8 or 8:30 am until early evening, later in summer, weather permitting. A status of open in the morning is not a promise for the afternoon, so plan as if you might walk down. Is it worth going to Table Mountain?

Yes. It is the landmark of Cape Town, one of the New7Wonders of Nature, and the view from the top takes in the city, Table Bay, Robben Island, Lion's Head and the length of the peninsula. Hiking up adds a real sense of achievement; riding up suits everyone else.

Most people who make the effort call it the highlight of their trip, and it is not hard to see why: a flat-topped mountain rising straight out of a city, with a plateau of rare plants, dassies on the rocks and cliffs dropping to the sea. The hike itself is a good workout rather than an expedition. Platteklip Gorge takes most people 2 to 3 hours up, with a stone-step path the whole way.

If you have bad knees, little time, or no interest in a steep hike, ride the cableway up and back and walk the easy paths on the top instead; you will see the same views.
